The difference between a prize draw and a judged competition

Random selection and skill-based judging are different mechanics, even when both are casually called competitions.

The word “competition” is often used for many kinds of promotions, but winner selection can work in very different ways. Two common models are a prize draw and a judged competition.

Prize draws select from valid entries
A draw normally uses a random or chance-based selection process described in the terms. The entrant's creative quality usually does not affect selection unless the promotion combines stages.

Judged competitions use criteria
A judged promotion may ask for a photograph, answer, design, recipe or other submission. The terms should explain the judging criteria and who makes the decision.

Tie-breakers can matter
Skill-based promotions sometimes include a tie-break question or secondary judging stage. Follow the requested format and any word or character limits.

Entry limits still apply
Neither format automatically means unlimited participation. Check whether one person or household can submit more than once.

Know the mechanic before entering
Understanding how the winner is chosen helps you decide how much effort an entry deserves. Fearless summaries can help with discovery, but the official rules define the selection process.
