Competition scam warning signs to know

A practical checklist of suspicious behaviours around fake promotions and fake winner messages.

Updated 4 October 2026Fearless Competitions

Competition scams can imitate genuine brands, real promotions or familiar social platforms. The safest approach is not to rely on one visual clue but to look at the whole process.

No clear promoter or terms
A promotion that cannot identify who runs it, what the prize is, who can enter or when it closes deserves caution. Genuine campaigns should provide enough information to understand the rules.

Lookalike accounts and domains
Small spelling changes, recently created profiles and unfamiliar web addresses can be signs of impersonation. Find the organisation independently rather than trusting a link in an unexpected message.

Pressure to act immediately
Real prizes can have claim deadlines, but extreme pressure combined with unusual requests is a warning sign. Verify first.

Requests for security credentials
Passwords, PINs and one-time authentication codes are not normal prize-claim details. Never provide them because someone says they are needed to release a prize.

Unexpected payment demands
Be cautious if a supposed winner must pay an unexplained fee before receiving the prize. Check the original terms and contact the promoter directly.
