What to check before entering a car competition

Insurance, collection, specification and other details to read before chasing a vehicle prize.

A car is a high-profile prize, but the headline model is only the beginning. Vehicle competitions can include practical conditions around collection, insurance, registration and the exact specification supplied.

Confirm the exact prize
Read the terms for model, trim, age and whether the vehicle is new, used or a demonstrator. Promotional photography may be illustrative, and substitutions can sometimes be permitted.

Check collection and delivery
The winner may need to collect the vehicle from a particular location. If delivery is offered, check whether it covers your region and whether any cost applies.

Budget for ownership
Insurance, fuel or charging, tax and ongoing maintenance are usually the winner's responsibility after handover. A free vehicle is not necessarily free to run.

Review eligibility carefully
Some promotions have residency, age or driving-licence conditions beyond the usual entry rules. Do not assume that being eligible to enter automatically means every person can take ownership in the same way.

Keep the official terms
For a major prize, save a copy of the terms and relevant winner correspondence until the handover is complete.
