How voucher and gift-card prizes work
Expiry dates, retailer restrictions and other details that affect the real usefulness of a voucher prize.
Vouchers and gift cards are flexible compared with many physical prizes, but they still have rules. The headline amount is only part of the value if the card expires quickly or can be used only in limited places.
Check the retailer and format
A prize can be a retailer-specific voucher, multi-store card or digital code. Confirm where it can be redeemed and whether online and in-store use are both allowed.
Look for expiry dates
Some vouchers expire after a fixed period. If the terms do not state the date, the issuer's standard gift-card conditions may apply.
Understand exclusions
Certain products, concessions, delivery charges or other gift cards can be excluded. High-value vouchers may also have transaction limits.
Cash alternatives are not automatic
A winner usually cannot demand cash unless the terms explicitly provide that option.
Protect digital codes
Treat an unused voucher code like something of value. Do not publish screenshots or send the code to someone claiming they need it to verify your prize.
For a voucher competition, read both the promotion terms and any conditions attached to the voucher itself.
