Why winner messages should always be verified

A prize message is exciting, but a quick independent check can protect you from impersonation scams.

Unexpected winner messages deserve a moment of verification, even when they mention a real competition. Fraudsters can copy brand names, logos and promotion details to make a message look convincing.

Confirm you entered
Start with your own records. If you cannot remember entering the named promotion, treat the message with extra caution and locate the original competition independently.

Check the sender outside the message
Do not rely only on a link provided in the winner notification. Visit the brand's official website or verified account yourself and compare the contact details and winner process.

Look at the timing
A message arriving before the competition closes or far outside the stated winner period may deserve additional scrutiny.

Understand reasonable verification
A promoter may need your name, address or proof of eligibility to deliver a prize. It should not need your password, one-time security code or unrelated banking login.

Ask the promoter when unsure
Use contact information published on the official site. A genuine promoter should be able to confirm whether the message came from its campaign.
