How social-media competitions can go wrong

Common problems with social giveaways and the checks that help you avoid fake winner accounts.

Social-media competitions are easy to discover and easy to imitate. A genuine brand post can attract fake accounts pretending to contact entrants, especially when the prize is popular.

Check the account carefully
Look at the username, account history and link from the brand's official website where possible. A copied profile image and familiar display name are not enough to prove an account is genuine.

Compare the winner process with the original post
The promotion should explain how and when winners are contacted. Be suspicious if a message arrives before the stated closing date or uses a completely different claim process.

Be cautious with payment requests
A legitimate prize should not suddenly require an unrelated payment to release it. Delivery details can be necessary, but passwords, PINs and full banking credentials are not normal prize-claim information.

Do not rely on comments alone
Scammers can reply directly under genuine competition posts. Return to the promoter's official account or website instead of following an unexpected comment link.

Report impersonation
If you find a fake winner account, report it to the platform and, where practical, tell the real promoter so other entrants can be warned.
